Pomegranate liqueur is part of Sicilian tradition. In our beloved Sicily, especially during the autumn period preceding the Christmas festivities, pomegranates, in their best ripening period, abound on the trees. The pomegranate, with its sweet-and-sour kernels, is a fruit that provides a myriad of beneficial properties, and we have just talked about it in this article.
Preparing a homemade pomegranate liqueur is very simple and satisfying. This recipe can warm you up during the cold winter months and can also be an original idea for homemade Christmas presents!
All you will need for this pomegranate liqueur recipe is some nice ripe pomegranates, some alcohol, sugar, lemons, spices and some friends to invite over on Sundays to prepare and enjoy it together!
The only pitfall you may face during preparation is the shelling of the fruit, of which you must avoid the whitish inner skin that could give your pomegranate liqueur a bitter aftertaste.
To help you with this step, we have written an article on how to peel a pomegranate in which you will also find an explanatory video filmed directly in our countryside in Sicily!

INGREDIENTS of pomegranate liqueur
- 3 ripe pomegranates
- 1/2 litre of alcohol
- 375 g sugar
- 500 ml water
- 3 cloves
- 1 cinnamon stick
- lemon peel
With these doses you get about one litre of liqueur.
pomegranate liqueur PROCEDURE
- To start, we need to shell three ripe pomegranates and collect as many kernels as possible.We explain how to do it here. We then place the beans in an airtight glass container in which we add half a litre of alcohol. We also add a cinnamon stick, 3 cloves, and lemon peel.
- Close the container and leave the mixture to macerate in a dark place for between 10 and 15 days. Every two days, remember to shake and stir the mixture.
- At the end of the two weeks, we can prepare a syrup from sugar and water in a saucepan. When the syrup is ready, we leave it to cool.
- When the syrup is cold, we can open our container and filter the alcohol content through a strainer into the syrup. We stir the mixture well and proceed to bottle our homemade pomegranate liqueur. Allow 7 to 10 days to pass before tasting it, stirring gently from time to time, and at the end the liqueur will be ready to be enjoyed.
- To give the pomegranate liqueur homemade to our friends for holidays or important occasions we can print a customised label and create a gift box. To get an idea, take a look at our customisable gift bottles!
The second recipe we propose requires much less preparation time. You will only need:
- 50cl of our 100% Pure Pomegranate Juice;
- 50cl of 95 degree alcohol;
- 50cl of pure water;
- herbs and botanicals to taste (cinnamon, lemon peel, citrus fruit, cloves);
- 200 grams of sugar.
In traditional pomegranate liqueur recipes, the amount of sugar is generally much more abundant, but our juice is so concentrated and authentic that no further additions are necessary!
It is therefore very simple to prepare the pomegranate liqueur at home.
We have already talked about the pomegranate, emphasising all its beneficial properties and in this section of our website you can find many cocktail recipes to recreate with your pomegranate liqueur or, if you want to save time, by purchasing our Pomegranate liqueur with 100% pure juice.
