If you are wondering how best to peel the pomegranate and extract the arils, in this article we suggest two different methods for doing so and give you tips on its uses!
The pomegranate is delicious and rich in nutrients but, compared to other more popular and consumed fruits, it is also quite complicated to clean.
This fruit is very pleasing to the palate because of its distinctive taste, it is said to bring good luck and wealth according to some myths or legends, it can be used in the preparation of many different recipes, but shelling it is by no means that simple.
HOW TO PEEL POMEGRANATE, FIRST METHOD
The simplest method to open a pomegranate requires only a few minutes and the use of tools that we can all find at home.
With the help of a chopping board or any flat surface, make a horizontal cut on the fruit and split it in half. The magic trick to extract each individual aril is to immerse the pomegranate in a bowl full of water; this way, the wet cap will easily detach from the kernels, which will remain intact, and you will avoid staining your hands, clothes and kitchen!
Continue like this until you have finished shelling the whole pomegranate, dried the extracted arils and are ready to enjoy them or use them in your cocktails and recipes!
How to peel pomegranate, second method
For this second method on how to peel the pomegranate, we advise you to remove the upper crown of the peel by incising the fruit horizontally, not too sharply, and, once this part has been removed, continue to incise the peel vertically following the divisions of the segments created by the white part inside the fruit.
At this point, the pomegranate will appear divided into four slices: spread them out with your hands as you would an orange. You can now remove the white part between each slice and the centre of the fruit by hand.
To extract the individual arils, you can directly pull them off with your fingers and enjoy them immediately. Otherwise, if you want to use them as a garnish or in some recipe, simply turn the pomegranate upside down over a bowl and give it a tap on the back: you will notice that the red kernels will fall off without difficulty.

More country advice
Remember to wash the cutting board and the tools used to open the pomegranate immediately after use, as the pomegranate juice can leave stains that are difficult to remove!
In addition, the harvest period for pomegranates starts in October and they can be found in markets and supermarkets until January. During the other months of the year it is rare to find pomegranates, unless they are imported from abroad or have been stored in cold storage for a long time.
Therefore, the further away from the tree and the harvest time you eat it, the less nutrients you will take in. We have written an article on the beneficial properties of the pomegranate that can be consulted at this link.
